Whoopi Goldberg, nome artístico de Caryn Elaine Johnson - nascida a 13 de Novembro de 1955), em Nova Iorque, é uma consagrada actriz, comediante, cantora e apresentadora norte-americana.
Foi inomeada ao Óscar de melhor actriz, pela sua interpretação dramática em 1986, no filme "A Cor Púrpura" ("The Color Purple"), em 1985, de Steven Spielberg, e ganhou, pela sua interpretação cómica em 1991, por "Ghost - O Espírito do Amor" ("Ghost") em 1990, como actriz secundária.
Seguiu, no cinema, um lado mais cómico como por exemplo em "Do Cabaré para o Convento" (1&2) - ("Sister Act", "Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit") e "Corrina, Corrina". Apresentou, também, a cerimónia do Óscar por quatro vezes.
Biografia~
Whoopi Goldberg nasceu em Manhattan e foi criado nas Chelsea-Elliot Houses , filha de Emma Johnson (née Harris; 21 de Setembro de 1931 - 29 de Agosto de 2010), uma enfermeira e professora, e Robert James Johnson Jr. (4 de Março de 1030, Maio de 1993), um clérigo.
Goldberg descreveu a sua mãe como uma "mulher de popa, forte e sábio" que a criou como mãe solteira com seu irmão Clyde (1949 - 11 de Maio de 2015). Os seus antepassados recentes migraram para o norte dos estados unidos, Faceville na Georgia , Palatka na Florida e Virginia.
Na adolescência, Goldberg saiu do Washington Irving High School e foi trabalhou como telefonista numa casa nocturna.
O seu nome artístico, Whoopi, foi tirado de um folguedo almofada. Já o apelido Goldberg é um nome de família alternativo que Whoopi diz que escolheu usar "para ser levada mais a sério".
Entre os anos de 1979 e 1981, viveu na Alemanha, trabalhando numa série de produções teatrais.
Vida pessoal
Goldberg foi casada três vezes: em 1973 com Alvin Martin (divorciou-se em 1979,); em 1 de Setembro de 1986 com o cineasta David Claessen (divorciaram-se em 1988), e a 1 de Outubro de 1994 como Lyle Trachtenberg (divorciaram-se em 1995).
