Mervyn LeRoy (1900 - 1987)

Mervyn LeRoy - nascido em São Francisco (Califórnia), em 15 de Outubro de 1900, e faleceu em Los Angeles (Califórnia) em 13 de Setembro de 1987 - foi um realizador de cinema americano.

Biografia

Mervyn começou no Teatro de Vaudeville, onde se estreou ainda criança ao lado da mãe. Em 1924, por intermédio de um primo, o produtor Jesse Lasky, empregou-se no Famous Players onde trabalhou no laboratório, como assistente de câmara e escritor de gags, até 1927.

O seu sonho era dirigir um filme e conseguiu essa proeza em 1927 ao realizar "No Place to Go". A partir daí, reconhecido pela crítica como uma grande revelação, dirigiu 30 filmes de 1930 a 1939.

Dirigiu todos os tipos de filmes mas destacou-se por aqueles que abordavam problemas sociais como "Little Caesar", "Two Seconds" e "I am a fugitive from a chain gang".

As suas maiores receitas de bilheteiria foram com filmes históricos como "A Ponte de Waterloo" de 1940 e "Quo Vadis?" de 1951.

Kathleen Doyle-Bates, mais conhecida como Kathy Bates - nascida em Memphis, a 28 de Junho de 1948 - é uma actriz e cineasta americana, vencedora do Óscar de melhor actriz em 1991 por "Misery - Capítulo Final".

Biografia

Nascida no sul dos Estados Unidos, filha de um engenheiro metalúrgico e de uma dona-de-casa, Kathy trabalhou nas profissões mais variadas antes de chegar aos palcos e às telas de cinema e televisão. Foi garçonete-cantora num hotel de luxo e é tida como uma compositora muito capaz. Por muitos anos manteve uma empresa de audiolivros.

Gordinha e baixinha, mas intensa, versátil e muito capaz, Kathy Bates actua com a mesma desenvoltura em dramas e comédias, rouba fácil a cena de qualquer outro actor e, com muita frequência, salva filmes não tão bons com a sua simples presença no elenco.

Formou-se em teatro na Universidade Metodista do Sul e, depois, foi para Nova Iorque, onde trabalhou como caixa da loja de presentes do Museu de Arte Moderna, o MoMA. Fez a sua estreia na televisão no início dos anos 70 num episódio da série "The Love Boat".

Carreira artística

A sua primeira vez na tela do cinema foi na comédia "Taking Off", de 1971, o primeiro filme norte-americano do realizador checo Milos Forman. Em 1976, estreou-se no circuito off-Broadway na peça "Vanities", conseguindo uma nomeação ao prémio Tony, o equivalente ao Óscar do teatro norte-americano, interpretando uma suicida em potencial no drama "Night, Mother".

Em 1982, sob a direção de Robert Altman, actuou no drama "Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean". No ano seguinte, apareceu no filme-catástrofe "The Day After" ("O dia seguinte") e, em 1988, na comédia "Arthur 2: On the Rocks".

Em 1990, finalmente, foi consagrada ao receber o Óscar de Melhor Actriz por "Misery . Capítilo Final", baseado no livro de mesmo nome do escritor Stephen King, trabalho pelo qual também ganhou o Globo de Ouro e a admiração de público e critica, sendo sempre lembrada pela sua actuação sinistra ao dar vida à insana e obsessiva Annie Wilkes, considerada uma das grandes vilãs do Cinema. Por essa actuação tornou-se a primeira actriz a ganhar um Óscar por uma performance num filme de Terror (terror/suspense).

Também participou no drama "White Palace" ("Loucos de paixão"), ao lado de Susan Sarandon, e na comédia "Dick Tracy", com Warren Beatty e Dustin Hoffman. Um dos seus papéis mais admirados é o de Evelyn Couch, do sucesso "Fried Green Tomatoes" ("Mulheres do Sul), de 1991, onde foi uma das protagonistas ao lado de Jessica Tandy. No mesmo ano, pode ser vista no filme "At Play in the Fields of the Lord" ("Brincando nos Campos do Senhor"), sob a direção do realizador argentino/brasileiro Hector Babenco.

Sob a direção de Woody Allen, em 1992, actuou em "Shadows and Fog" ("Sombras e Nevoeiro"), em "Diabolique" de 1996. Em 1997, foi dirigida por James Cameron em "Titanic", onde interpretou a nova-rica e inanfundável Molly Brown. Em 2007, viveu a amarga "Patrícia", mãe da viúva "Holly" na comédia romântica "Ps I Love You".

Kathy fez uma pequena participação na nona temporada do seriado de comédia "Two and a Half Men" da rede CBS. No papel, interpreta o fantasma de Charlie Harper, que assombra Alan quando ele está internado no hospital.

Entre Outubro de 2013 e Janeiro de 2014, interpretou Madame LaLaurie, no seriado "American Horror Story: Coven".

Em 2014, Kathy fez uma participação na quarta temporada do seriado de comédia "Mike & Molly" da rede CBS. Interpretou Kay McKinnon, a amiga dos sonhos de Molly (Melissa McCarthy), mas ela é uma grande amiga de sua sogra Peggy (Rondi Reed). No mesmo ano, também ao lado de Melissa McCarthy, actuou como Lenore no filme "Tammy".

Já desde Outubro de 2014 até Janeiro de 2015, Kathy interpretou Ethel Darling, no seriado "American Horror Story: Freak Show".

Em Outubro de 2015, Kathy Bates passou a integrar o elenco de American Horror Story: Hotel.

Lloyd Vernet Bridges, Jr. - nascido em San Leandro (Califórnia), a 15 de Janeiro de 1913, e falecido em Los Angeles (Califórnia), a 10 de Março de 1998 - foi um actor norte-americano, que estrelou inúmeras séries de televisão e apareceu em mais de 150 filmes. Bridges é mais conhecido pelo personagem Mike Nelson na série de televisão "Sea Hunt" (1958). É pai dos também actores Beau Bridges e Jeff Bridges.

Biografia

Lloyd Bridges era filho de Lloyd Vernet Bridges, Sr. e de Harriet Evelyn Bridges. Lloyd foi um astro do atletismo na sua adolescência. Os seus pais eram oriundos do Kansas. Bridges graduou-se na Petaluma High School em 1931. Estudou artes dramáticas na UCLA, onde era membro da fraternidade Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

Formado em arte dramática, apareceu pela primeira vez no cinema no começo dos anos 40, com a sua participação em grupos teatrais radicais e acabou entrando para a lista negra do FBI na era do Macartismo.

Carreira

Bridges estreou-se na Broadway em 1936, como figurante em "Frenshman Love", e tornou-se conhecido entre os brasileiros pela sua participação no seriado de TV "Aventura Submarina", exibido pela extinta TV Tupi.

Produzido no fim da década de 1950 e início da seguinte, foram rodados 156 episódios, conquistando uma audiência esmagadora nos Estados Unidos. Lloyd Bridges foi um dos protagonistas do clássico "High Noon" ("O Comboio apitou três vezes") de 1952.

Apareceu em cerca de vinte filmes B da Columbia Pictures. Alto, loiro e de feições rudes, era o ideal para westerns e filmes de acção, tendo abandonado o estúdio que o contratara em 1945.

Em 1980, destacou-se na comédia cinematográfica "Airplane!" ("Aeroplano") e "Hot Shots" ("Ases pelos Ares" de 1991.

No início da década de 1950, Bridges testemunhou perante o Comité de Actividades Anti-americanas, confirmando a sua filiação ao Partido Comunista.

Possui uma estrela no Passeio da Fama localizada em 7065 Hollywood Boulevard.

Vida pessoal

Bridges foi casado com Dorothy Simpson, com quem teve quatro filhos: Beau Bridges, Jeff Bridges, Lucinda Bridges e Garrett Bridges, falecido de síndrome de morte súbita infantil a 3 de Agosto de 1948. O actor Jordan Bridges é seu neto.

Morte

Bridges faleceu aos 85 anos, a 10 de Março de 1998. Foi cremado e as suas cinzas foram dispersas pela sua família.

Homenagens

O episódio ("The Burning") da última temporada de "Seinfeld" (1998) foi dedicado à sua memória. Bridges havia interpretado Izzy Mandelbaum nos episódios "The English Patient" em 1997 e "The Blood" em 1998.

O seu último filme, "Jane Austen's Mafia!", uma sátira à saga "O Padrinho" ("The Godfather") foi lançado em sua homenagem no mesmo ano da sua morte.
