Ernest Borgnine, nome artístico de Ermes Effron Borgnino - nascido em Hamden (Connecticut), a 24 de Janeiro de 1917, e falecido em Los Angeles (Califórnia), a 8 de Julho de 2012 - foi um actor norte-americano de cinema, teatro e televisão.
Borgnine era filho de imigrantes da região de Módena, em Itália. Após servir, durante dez anos, na Marinha, tendo mesmo participado na II Guerra Mundial, cursou a escola de teatro Randall School of Drama no estado de Connecticut, estreando-se na Broadway em 1949, já com 32 anos, num pequeno papel de enfermeiro, na peça de sucesso "Harvey".
Em 1953, já vivendo em Los Angeles, com o seu rosto rude e físico de boxeur, teve o seu primeiro grande momento no cinema interpretando o cruel sargento "Fatso" Judson no filme vencedor do Óscar daquele ano, "Até à Eternidade", com Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr e Frank Sinatra.
Em 1955, Ernest Borgnine conquistaria fama e reconhecimento mundiais ao ganhar o Óscar de melhor actor pelo seu desempenho como o tímido e sensível açougueiro Marty Piletti no filme "Marty", também vencedor do Óscar de melhor filme e da Palma de Ouro do Festival de Cannes, o que tornou o filme no maior sucesso de crítica daquele ano.
A popularidade e o sucesso conseguidos aumentariam nas décadas seguintes, em filmes como "Os Vikings", "O Voo da Fênix", "Doze Indomáveis Patifes", o lendário western "A Quadrilha Selvagem", "Desafio de Gigantes", o primeiro 'filme-catástrofe "Aventura do Poseidon e "Nova York, 1997", entre outros.
Borgnine também se tornou um astro da televisão norte-americana nos anos 60, estrelando a popular série cómica "McHale's Navy", no papel de um marinheiro – que ele foi na vida real durante uma década antes de se tornar actor – pelo qual recebeu uma nomeação ao prémio Emmy de melhor actor de comédia.
Maçon, foi casado por cinco vezes, duas delas com actrizes famosas como Katy Jurado e Ethel Merman (este último casamento durou apenas um mês). Nos últimos anos, já semi-aposentado, (em Janeiro de 2007 completou 90 anos) emprestou a sua voz aos filmes animados de Bob Esponja e apareceu, como ele próprio, na série Os Simpsons e em comerciais da tv americana.
Pela sua contribuição às artes e à indústria do cinema, Borgnine, que participou como actor principal e secundário, em mais de 100 filmes ao longo de cinquenta anos de carreira, foi agraciado com uma estrela no famoso Passeio da Fama de Hollywood.
Em 2005, numa das suas últimas declarações públicas que fez ao longo da carreira diversos papéis de militares e cowboys durões, proferiu um comentário famoso e divertido sobre o filme "Brokeback Mountain", que relata a relação homossexual entre dois cowboys:“Eu não vi o filme e ele não me interessa, mas acho que John Wayne deve estar rolando de raiva dentro de sua sepultura.”
Em 2012, Ernest Borgnine morreu de insuficiência renal, num hospital de Los Angeles, na Califórnia.
