Cesar Julio Romero Jr. - nascido em Nova Iorque, a 15 de Fevereiro de 1907, e falecido em Santa Mónica (Califórnia), a 1 de Janeiro de 1994 - foi um actor norte-americano que actuou no cinema, rádio e televisão durante quase 60 anos.
A sua ampla gama de papéis em cena incluem amantes latinos, figuras históricas em dramas e personagens de comédias domésticas leves como o Joker da série de televisão Batman, que foi incluído em 2013, na lista dos "60 maiores vilões de todos os tempos", pela TV Guide.
Romero nasceu em Nova Iorque, filho de Maria Mantilla (filha do herói nacional cubano José Martí) e de Cesar Julio Romero. O seu pai era um importador-exportador de origem italiana de máquinas de refinação de açúcar, e a sua mãe era uma cantora cubana de concerto. Esse estilo de vida, no entanto, mudou drasticamente quando os seus pais perderam o seu negócio de importação de açúcar e sofreu perdas com a Quebra do Mercado de Acções de 1929. Romero mudou-se, mais tarde, com a sua família para a costa oeste norte-americana o que lhe permitiu sustentar a sua grande família.
A personalidade e o carisma da personagem Joker (no Brasil, Coringa) permitiram interpretações famosas e marcantes dessa personagem nos cinemas e na TV, com destaque para o anárquico Joker de Cesar Romero, que o interpretou, por muitos anos, no seriado Batman dos anos 1960.
Cesar Romero começou a sua carreira no cinema na década de 1930. Até aos anos 50, geralmente interpretando papéis secundários. Em "O Homem Sombra" ("The thin man"), de 1934, desempenhou um papel secundário. Muitos dos seus primeiros trabalhos em cena eram pequenos personagens como gangsteres italianos ou príncipes das Índias Orientais.
O seu primeiro papel de destaque foi como Khoda Khan, em "Shirley, Soldado da Índia" ("Wee Willie Winkie"), de 1937, dirigido por John Ford. Fez 20 filmes pela 20th Century Fox, co-estrelando com Carmen Miranda e Alice Faye em "Férias em Havana" ("Week-end in Havana"), de 1941, e com Betty Grable em "Primavera nas Montanhas" ("Springtime in the Rockies"), filme de 1942, também interpretou papais menores, como o pianista Sinjin da banda de Glenn Miller em "Mulheres e Música" ("Orchestra Waves"), em 1942.
O magnata da Fox, Darryl F. Zanuck, selecionou-o, pessoalmente, para co-estrelar com Tyrone Power o filme "Capitão de Castela" ("Captain from Castile"), de 1947, dirigido por Henry King. Enquanto Power interpretou um personagem ficcional, Romero apareceu em cena como Hernán Cortés, um conquistador espanhol, conhecido por ter derrubado o Império Asteca de Montezuma e conquistar o centro do atual território do México. Romero também apareceu ao lado de Frank Sinatra em "Os Onze do Oceano" (Ocean's Eleven"), em 1960.
Na televisão, fez várias participações especiais em "The Martha Raye Show", da rede NBC em meados dos anos 1950. Os seus trabalhos na televisão incluem o papel de tio de Don Diego de la Vega na série Zorro pela rede ABC.
O reconhecimento internacional veio com o seriado Batman dos anos 1960, onde Cesar Romero interpretou o Joker (Coringa), um dos personagens mais famosos da famosa banda-desenhada, numa versão cómica do vilão. A unica exigência do actor para viver o "príncipe palhaço do crime", era não rapar o bigode que usava, sendo parcialmente visível sob a maquilhagem branca.
Romero permaneceu em actividade nas telas de TV mesmo depois do fim da série em 1968, aparecendo em Banacek, Murder, She Wrote, Magnum, P.I. e Falcon Crest. A sua última aparição nas telas foi no docudrama Carmen Miranda: "Bananas is my Business", filmado em 1993, e lançado nos cinemas em 1995.
Romero foi amigo de grandes realizadores e trabalhou com John Ford, Ernst Lubitsch, Rubens Donaldson, Otto Preminger e Howard Hawks. Durante as filmagens de "Férias em Havana" tornou-se amigo de Carmem Miranda e apaixonou-se pelo Rio de Janeiro, que visitou por duas vezes, uma delas no Carnaval de 1946 ao lado do actor Tyrone Power, de quem era amigo íntimo.
Romero morreu a 1 de Janeiro de 1994, em Santa Mônica (Califórnia), vitima de bronquite e pneumonia, aos 86 anos. O seu corpo foi cremado e as cinzas enterradas no Inglewood Park Cemetery, em Inglewood, Califórnia.
