Judith Olivia "Judi" Dench - nascida em North Yorkshire, a 9 de Dezembro de 1934 - é uma premiada actriz britânica nascida em Inglaterra, vencedora do Óscar e do BAFTA. Quando tinha treze anos, entrou para a The Mount School, em York. Hoje, é patrona da Friends' School Saffron Walden.
Judi já foi galardoada com duas importantes condecorações:
Em 1998, a Ordem dos Companheiros de Honra (em inglês: Order of the Companions of Honour), que é uma ordem britânica e da Commonwealth fundada por rei Jorge V, em Junho de 1917, como uma recompensa por realizações proeminentes nas artes, literatura, música, ciência, política, indústria ou religião e, em 1970, a Mais Excelente Ordem do Império Britânico (em inglês: Most Excellent Order of the British Empire), que é uma ordem de cavalaria estabelecida, em 4 de junho de 1917, por Jorge V.
Em 1971, casou-se com o actor britânico Michael Williams, com quem teve uma filha, Tara Cressilda Williams (conhecida como "Finty Williams"), nascida a 24 de Setembro de 1972. A sua filha tornou-se, mais tarde, actriz como a mãe. Judi estreou-se com o marido na sitcom inglesa "A Fine Romance". Michael Williams morreu de cancro no pulmão aos 65 anos, em 2001.
Dench recebeu muitas nomeações e prémios pelas suas actuações em teatro, cinema e televisão. Os seus prémios incluem seis BAFTA, seis Olivier Awards, dois Screen Actors Guild Awards, dois Globos de Ouro, um prémio da Academia, e um Tony Award. Também recebeu o BAFTA Fellowship (2001) e o Olivier Award Especial (2004).
As muitas aparições de Dench na televisão incluem "As Time Goes By" e "A Fine Romance". Tem dirigido peças, também.
Filha de Reginald Arthur Dench e Olave, Judi Dench entrou, aos treze anos, para a "The Mount School", em York.
Recebeu a sua formação profissional no Central School of Speech and Drama, em Londres, e estreou-se como Ophelia em "Hamlet", em Liverpool, em 1957. Depois, apareceu em várias temporadas teatrais em Oxford e Nottingham. Em 1961, entrou para a Royal Shakespeare Company e fez muitas aparições em Stratford e Londres ao longo das duas décadas que se seguiram, ganhando vários prêmios de melhor actriz.
Dench construiu uma boa reputação, como uma das melhores actrizes da história pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial, principalmente pelo seu trabalho no teatro, o seu maior investimento em toda a sua carreira. Também fez várias aparições no teatro West End e no National Theatre, ambos em Londres. Ganhou seis prémios Laurence, considerado o "Óscar" do teatro britânico. Apareceu na Broadway, também, em "Amy's Room".
No cinema, estreou-se no filme britânico, "Four in the Morning", em 1965. Ao longo da sua carreira, recebeu o Óscar de Melhor Actriz Secundária pela sua atuação em "A Paixão de Shakespeare" ("Shakespeare in Love"), de 1998, e momeada à estatueta dourada seis outras vezes, cinco das quais como Melhor Actriz, pelas suas interpretações em "Sua majestade, Mrs. Brown" ("Mrs. Brown"), de 1997; "Iris", de 2001; "Mrs. Henderson" ("Mrs. Henderson Presents"), de 2005; "Diário de um Escândalo" ("Notes on a Scandal"), de 2006; "Philomena", de 2013 e uma nomeação para Melhor Actriz Secundária em "Chocolate" ("Chocolat"), de 2000. Pela Academia Britânica (BAFTA), já foi agraciada com 7 prémios de Melhor Actriz e nomeada por mais outras 8 premiações.
Chegando aos setenta anos, Dench continua a grande jóia do teatro de Londres. É várias vezes comparada e "contrastada" com Maggie Smith, outra grande actriz britânica da mesma geração, com quem apareceu em vários filmes e no palco com "Breath of Life", de David Hare.
Desde 1995 que Judi tem interpretado o papel de M (Chefe do MI6) na saga de filmes James Bond, aparecendo nos seguintes filmes:
