George Burns, nome artístico de Nathan Birnbaum - nascido a 20 de Janeiro de 1896, em Nova Iorque, e falecido a 9 de Março de 1996, em Beverly Hills (Los Angeles, Califórnia) - foi um actor. comediante e escritor norte-americano.
Com a sua esposa Gracie Allen formou uma dupla que fez muito sucesso no cinema e na televisão durante 19 anos. Após a morte dela, continuou actuando no cinema, na televisão e no teatro.
Em 1976 ganhou o Óscar de melhor actor secundário pela sua actuação na comédia "Uma parelha de Chatos". George era famoso pelo seu permanente bom humor e amor por cigarros e charutos.
Em Julho de 1994, Burns caiu na sua banheira e teve de se submeter a uma cirurgia para remover o líquido que se tinha acumulado no cérebro. A sua saúde começou a declinar a partir daí. Todos as festividades para comemorar o seu centésimo aniversário foram canceladas. Em Dezembro de 1995, Burns estava bem o suficiente para assistir a uma festa de Natal organizada por Frank Sinatra, onde adquiriu uma gripe, o que o enfraqueceu ainda mais. A 20 de Janeiro de 1996, ainda comemorou o seu centésimo aniversário, mas já não estava bem.
A 9 de Março de 1996, apenas quarenta e nove dias depois do seu aniversário (marco centenário), Burns morreu na sua casa em Beverly Hills de paragem cardíaca. O seu funeral foi realizado três dias depois, no Wee Kirk Heather em Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Glendale.
George Burns foi enterrado com o seu melhor fatoo azul escuro, camisa azul clara e gravata vermelha, juntamente com três charutos no bolso, a sua peruca, o relógio que Gracie, que lhe ofereceu, o seu anel, e, no bolso, as chaves e a sua carteira com 10 notas de cem dólares, uma nota de cinco dólares e três notas de um dólar, totalizando US$ 1008.
